Red and Purple Line modernation work

Beware of how the work may affect you!

The CTA is now set to begin the next phase of the Red and Purple Modernization (RPM) Program this month with station closures at Granville, Thorndale and Bryn Mawr starting Friday January 24th at 10pm and ending Monday January 27th at 4am. During these times; the CTA will use shuttle buses between Loyola and Berwyn stations.

These preliminary closings are the first steps to improve the tracks and signals prior to the prolonged closures in late 2020 or early 2021 for the RPM. The CTA has stated that during the Spring of 2020, nearly every weekend will see station closures for the projects and commuters are encouraged to allow extra travel time and regularly check the CTA alerts for up-to-date information as these weekends can change due to weather and other unforeseen circumstances.

The RPM is a multi-phase project aimed at rebuilding a 9.6 mile track that is more than 100 years old to help eliminate slow zones and increase the reliability of the transit system. Later in the year; the CTA will begin construction of new stations at Lawrence, Argyle, Berwyn and Bryn Mawr that resemble the newly building Wilson CTA Station. Once these stations close late 2020 or early 2021; the CTA will open temporary train stations to help alleviate travel pressure during the construction.

South on the Redline at Belmont; the Red-Purple bypass portion of the RPM is well-under way as crews have begun drilling foundation holes for the fly-over. The Bypass will be used as means for the Brown Line to travel over the Red and Purple trains; allowing for quicker travel and an increase in trains. Currently, the foundation work does not impact commuters at the Belmont Station.
