Located between Lake Michigan, Damen Ave (2000 W), Diversey (2800 N) and Irving Park (4000 N), Lakeview borders Lincoln Park to the South, Uptown to the North, Roscoe Village to the West, and the lakefront to the East. Originally an independent city, the voters of Lakeview approved its annexation to the City of Chicago in 1889. In recent years the area has flourished and become an alternative to Lincoln Park, offering shops, restaurants and entertainment for all tastes. Lincoln Park, the city’s largest park, stretches along the lakefront east of Lakeview and provides running and bicycle paths, athletic fields, and large grassy areas for public use. Local theaters and concert venues include The Vic and Metro.
Two thriving areas within Lakeview are Southport Avenue and Wrigleyville. Southport is lined with many trendy restaurants and shops as well as the historic Music Box Theater. Wrigleyville is home to Wrigley Field and the Chicago Cubs as well as countless restaurants, bars, and theaters.
Lakeview has excellent public transportation with its many bus routes and stops for the brown, red, and purple “L” lines for easy access to downtown (the Loop) and the northern suburbs of Skokie, Evanston, and Wilmette. Residential parking permits are required for nighttime parking on side streets.
Lakeview is now one of the most desirable residential areas in the city. Its residents tend to be young professionals. The construction of single family homes, townhouses, and condominiums continues to reduce the supply of rental apartments.
